If there’s ever a course offered in the way soaps should be, the scene
in which ALL MY CHILDREN’s Zach stood by his wife’s hospital bed and told
her how he really feels could be page one in the textbook. Days before,
we listened as the casino owner waxed poetic – in his own way – about how
his neurotic missus had somehow enchanted him. Then at the hospital he
conveyed his longing through only a few lines spoken to the unconscious
woman. “Hey, Kendall. There’s something I’ve got to tell you. This wasn’t
supposed to happen,” he said, sighing. “When I walk into a room, I always
make sure I know where the exits are, you now? I always make sure there’s
a way out. And there is no way out this time. I have fallen in love with
you, Kendall.” His kiss to her forehead at the end of the scene left us
craving the future moment when Mrs. Slater (hopefully) reciprocates.
