Like an alcoholic trying to resist the urge to drink, Ian has desperately sought help while pondering a never-ending lifetime of pain for both himself and his loved ones.

"I can't have you leave in the morning and be afraid of what you'll find when you come home," the doctor explained to Lucy as he subjected himself to Chris' latest attempt to "cure" immortality.
